Changing a flat

Changing a flat is an essential skill required in daily training. This skill must be learned for both front and rear wheels equally.

Participants are expected to be able to do this on their own and carry the necessary equipment with them at all times. 

Minimum equipment needed

  • tire levers
  • space tube and/or patch kit
  • pump or CO2 cartridges

PROCESS

  • remove wheel from forks or frame
  • open brakes as needed
  • open quick release and undo as required
  • remove tire
  • remove punctured tube
  • inspect tire for debris
  • replace tube (new or repaired)
  • install tire
  • ensure tire seated properly, minimal chance of pinching tube
  • inflate tube
  • replace wheel in forks or frame
  • ensure tire seated properly
  • reinstall wheel
  • secure quick release safely
  • adjust brakes as required
