Cleaning your bike

Regularly cleaning your bike allows you to inspect it for damage, mechanical problems and ensure dirt and oil build up on the drive train (front chainrings, chain, rear cassette and front/rear derailleurs) does not compromise performance.

Use a mild dish soap detergent in warm water to clean the frame and wheels. Use a degreasing solution to clean drive train. Allow degreasing solution to evaporate before reapplying lubricant to drive train.

  • ensure brakes are adjusted properly and brake pads not worn down excessively
  • clean and inspect frame
  • check for dents, scratches, cracks
  • clean and inspect wheels, degrease rims as needed
    • check for dents, scratches, cracks, undue wear on rims, cuts in tires, irregularities in the tires, excessive tread wear, loose hubs
  • clean and inspect drive train
    • degrease front chainrings, chain, rear cassette and front/rear derailleurs
    • check pedals, cranks and bottom bracket are not loose
    • reapply lubricant
    • check all gears function, adjust as required
  • ensure seat post, saddle, stem, handlebars and brake/shift levers are all secure and properly positioned relative to your most recent bike fit
  • inspect cleats and shoes for wear
