Being a World Leader is all about innovation, listening, observing and asking questions that combine leadership, science and common sense. Most importantly, an open mind that does not censor thoughts or ideas.
The RTC goal, 10 new world leading innovative ideas every week or two. Who cares about the source! They may or may not be original ideas, but they are innovative ideas to consider. Feel free to contribute your own ideas on Twitter to @RTCVancouver #WorldLeading #training

November 29, 2011
- When your health is not 100% neither are your idea- that’s it for this week
November 14, 2011
- Sparks of greatness need cultivating into consistent performance
- Determine what primary characteristics underly performance. Use this for Talent ID.
- Science may not (yet) know the right questions to ask in order to get the answers we need in high performance.
- Learn to trust in reliable experience based knowledge
- High performance is poorly understood, rarely exposed to true scientific study, yet highly coveted.
- Don’t use existing performance or you’ll get more of the same.
- Talent ID requires the patience, time and resources to develop that talent.
- A good talent management program will realize peak performance in less time and with less wasted resources
- Realization of talent is confounded by environmental change (geography, culture, socio-economic status, etc.)
- Look sideways for talent, not just at what is in front of you, and never what is behind you (or others)

- Health first, fast will follow
- Sugar coating bad news can be insulting- honesty builds respect
- Talent ID- identify those of interest then track their performance
- Strive for causality in your goal setting- do know that your process goals will positively effect your outcome goal?
- Progress moves at the rate of change; technical, physiological, psychological, tactical
- Coaches manage the rate of change- art and science working together
- Education impacts the rate change- coaches must educate
- Some athletes (people) will change, others will not
- World leaders embrace change and adapt to the challenge
- Nap time is important for everyone
October 3, 2011 Concussion Management and Prevention
- Make concussion education a priority in athletes, coaches, officials, parents,… Everyone
- Educate everyone that concussions (i.e. brain injury) are worse than broken bones
- Educate everyone that concussions can occur without impact on head
- Educate everyone that concussion symptoms can be confused with fatigue and overtraining symptoms
- Educate everyone that “tough love” cycling culture will lead to longer term or permanent side effects from concussion
- Research, adopt and develop protocols for triathlon/endurance sport return to training and competition
- Strict and relentless enforcement of low stimulus, low stress healing environment immediately post-concussion- for as long as it takes!
- Resolution of symptoms dictates return to training and competition schedule
- Incorporate core strength, posture and stability training to minimize risk of concussion
- Pre-season concussion screening, post-impact screening and daily fatigue monitoring must be integrated
September 26, 2011
- use social media to build RTC community; fb, twitter, foursquare, blog, web,…
- turn medical and paramedical attention on systematic problems in program- on coaching issues
- be open to paradigm shifts in sport science
- take time to address tricky social issues NOW that will have huge impact later
- athlete education as important as athlete training
- saying no can be hard, but is an essential part of sustainable growth
- saying no does not mean responsibilities end there- positive follow up
- well planned change is positive
- fully integrated support team sharing info in real time; not weekly, not monthly, not quarterly nor yearly
- learning to not please everyone can have huge benefits on all the others
September 19, 2011
